Its Not What You Do, Its How You Do It
HeartStart to Your Week, Monday, Aug 4th Free Conference Call Yesterday I had the opportunity to spend time with big names in the entertainment industry. And I was blown away by how small minded these big names were. They paraded their presence around like a peacock strutting its stuff and fluffing its feathers, but missed moment after moment of deep hearted connection and care. It reminded me of a story from the Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism) about a Tzaddik ("righteous person"). Jewish mystics believe that there are 10 Tzaddiks at any given time on the planet, and that their presence of unconditional service, love and care balances the equation of all the negativity of the rest of the world, striking a delicate and precarious equilibrium that keeps human negativity from destroying the whole world. There is a story of one such Tzaddik from several hundred years ago, who was the village garbage collector. People would come from all over the country to meet with this master, seek his counsel, sit in his presence. One seeker that came to him asked, "Rabbi, why do you allow yourself to do such mundane, menial work when you are the highest among us and could have any job that you wish?" The Rabbi's answer reflected his consciousness. "This job perpetually reminds me that it is not what you do that makes you the person you are, but how you do it. I collect people's garbage with love, and it reminds me of who I am. If I were to become a politician, I might forget that I am how I do what I do and mistake myself for the title. What looks like a hard job to you, is actually the easiest job for me to remember who I really am!" In a time when so many of us chase identities in career tracks, relationships, and other status symbols like dollar value or even measure our global service by our contributions and external solutions, what a powerful story this Tzaddik's life represents- a reminder that our contribution does not lie in what we do, but in how we do it. The power to choose the how, whether it is acting on TV or collecting someone's garbage, in my experience comes from the heart. In our Intermediate HeartMath webinar we teach people to tap into a powerful aspect of the heart called attitude breathing- which empowers people to radiate order, peace, well being, enthusiasm and care into whatever their activities are. When we get caught in self created images and masks of who we think we are or wish we could be, we siphen energy away from the radiant essence of our being. Start with who and how, not what. And let that heart of gold unfold the rest from there. What an adventure! Tune into tonight's heartstart call to learn more!
